In these past days, weeks, or months, you may have found yourself asking many questions about what is actually happening to you. For not only does loss affect you physically, emotionally, and cognitively, but it also impacts you socially and spiritually.

Thus, having experienced a significant loss, it is of great importance to find ways to nurture yourself, to learn effective self-care practices and to commit to following behaviors that will lead you to a higher quality of health and wellness.

Questions you may be asking yourself are:

  • What can I do to help myself with my fatigue and my inability to sleep through the night?
  • How can I help myself to feel more relaxed, deal with my muscles aches and pains, my shortness of breath, a queasy stomach, loss of appetite or any other physical symptoms?
  • How can I find ways to experience appropriate physical contact? Would I be open to having a massage? Am I able to give and receive hugs from friends and family members?
  • What kind of music do I enjoy? What music helps me to get in touch with my feelings?
  • What activities can I schedule so I have something to look forward to, even if I feel so much pain and sadness?
  • Why is it so hard to remember even the simplest of things and to make daily decisions?
  • What are some of my short-term goals? What are some of my long-term goals?
  • How is it that my relationships are changing and I am feeling more distant from others?
  • When I am able to call my family members and friends, should I talk about my loss or do I need to keep the topics light and superficial?
  • Will I really be able to find meaning and purpose in my life again?
  • What are ways for me to connect with nature and with something larger than myself?

Whether you are mourning the loss of a loved one, embracing a chronic illness or experiencing any other type of loss, learning and practicing the art of self-care will certainly help enhance your journey towards healing. As your coach and companion, I will walk along side you, support you to be compassionate towards yourself, and help you to create conditions in your life, so that you can ultimately integrate your loss into your heart and soul. By doing your healing work, you can truly learn to live and love fully again and have new meaning and purpose for your life.

Self-Care and Its Benefits

Being a person who has traveled the path of loss on several occasions, I have also learned the importance of honoring myself and practicing self-care. A health and wellness program that I have discovered to be extremely beneficial for myself and for so many others individuals, experiencing loss or other life challenges, is The Circle of Life.

The Circle of Life was created by Rebecca McLean and Dr. Roger Janke of Health Action, Inc., Santa Barbara, CA. It involves a gentle, flexible, yet powerful process to help enhance one’s health, empowerment and transformation. Its wholistic and nationally prominent mind-body/self-care coaching system has also been successfully used in clinics, hospitals, private practice, work settings and many other environments for individuals seeking to improve the overall quality of life.

Whether your emphasis is on stress mastery, diet, spirituality or any other aspects of your life affected by loss, The Circle of Life is an excellent program to help you enhance and regain your vitality and focus. By using specific coaching strategies, by making a commitment to improve the quality of your life and by having the support of your companion and/or coach and/or group, you will be able to design and implement a self-care action plan to reach your goals for health and well-being once again.

For the purposes of explaining the program and benefits for you, a step-by step process is outlined below. As a client you will have the opportunity to:

  • Complete a Circle of Life Assessment, evaluating 12 aspects of your life.
  • Conduct your own Readiness for Change Assessment.
  • Create and implement a powerful step-by-step plan using: a focus area, strengths, intentions, goals, challenges, affirmations, accountability and visualizations.
  • Learn and practice self-care methods that enhance your process (gentle movement, self massage, breath practice, meditation and visualization).
  • Access your own inner wisdom, resources and power, as well as the ideas and support of others if you are a group member.
  • Experience the sense of empowerment that comes from setting your own intentions and witnessing your healthy changes.
  • Be able to refine your goals, sustain your changes and learn what you need to do to keep moving forward in your life.
  • Create support for yourself and for others if you are a group participant.

Knowing how important self-care is to your grief and loss journey, as well as to your total health and well-being, it is my hope that you will contact me by phone 218-310-8821 or e-mail me at susan@embracingourlosses.com to set up a complimentary session or to seek further information.
